That’s Right, Blogging
I once wrote a popular blog called Holy Scrap, which I later retitled The Good Life Lab. Its popularity led to a book deal, and I authored The Good Life Lab—a revolutionary manual thinly veiled as a modern, digital homesteading guide. The book brought me joy, new friendships, opportunities, and a year of travel. Then came the pandemic.
A breakup with my partner of 18 years.
And a cascade of life changes.

And a cascade of life changes.
These experiences have continually pushed me to reimagine not only who I believe myself to be, but also how I engage with a world that’s shifting—politically, socially, and personally.
A Return to Blogging (And Why I’m Skipping Substack)
Lately, I’m feeling rather analog. And in today’s digital world, blogging might seem like an analog move—especially next to the dominance of social media. But I’m pulling back from those platforms, trying to clear out the residue they’ve left behind.
I’m not interested in short-form, attention-span-driven content anymore.
I considered Substack, but as a reader I’ve never found it to be a smooth fit. So I’m returning to what worked for me before: Blogger.

I write for myself.
I value sharing.
I’m not chasing influence. I just want to be real.
So What Is What The Flux About?
It’s about starting over.
Our lives are often framed as linear trajectories—“this, then that.” But today feels different. At 57, I’m realizing it’s time to let go of the ideas that once defined me.
I’m no longer empire-building.
My ego no longer needs the recognition that once had me counting Google hits.
Even the fundamentals—where I live, who I live with, what I need from a place—are all in flux. The off-grid, income-producing, sustainable acre I built in New Mexico no longer brings the fulfillment it once did.
A Blog About Big Changes
This blog will be about the pivot of big change.
Right now, I’m researching and taking action toward citizenship opportunities outside the United States. And, much like when I started Holy Scrap, I know there’s a lot of data to track and many deep feelings to sort through.
In true Holy Scrap fashion, I’ll log it all here—for myself, and for whomever it might help.
